How to Prepare for Your Engagement Session

My goal as your photographer is to capture the beauty of your relationship and your personalities. I love when a couple's personalities shine through during sessions. I’m here to capture who you really are around each other. Therefore I want to make sure you're feeling your best AND looking your best during your engagement session.

1. What Do I Wear?

I get this question often. Everyone has their own style and we love when couples incorporate their styles in their photo sessions. Wear what reflects your style as a couple.

If you and your partner are the “dress-up night-out-on-the-town” type of couple then dress fancy. If you’re not the type of person that wears high heels or khakis, then don’t force yourself into an outfit you’ll be uncomfortable in. Wear what you and your partner are comfortable in, that also reflects who you are as a couple.

If you want to incorporate a specific theme like “Vintage” or “Nashville-themed” - please do so! We love themed engagement sessions.

2. Choosing Your Outfit Colors

It's easiest to coordinate with solid monochromatic colors. Primary and secondary colors also bring a pop of personality and energy to photographs. Darker colors tend to make subjects look thinner.

Dark pants/jeans with dark shoes visually anchors a photograph and gives the photograph texture. Try to avoid wearing white unless you’re doing a beach session. This is because people’s eyes will direct towards the brightest point in an image and beach scenes tend to have a bright background, therefore not contrasting drastically with your outfits.

3. Match the Vibes of the Session Location.

If you’re doing a natural or outdoorsy session - I wouldn’t recommend ball gown and high heels. Make sure you take your engagement location into consideration when choosing your outfits.

Some locations are a good mid-ground for either casual or classy style of outfits. Such as downtown or natural garden locations.

4. Consider Your Home Decor Style

When choosing what color and style will look best on you, also take into account the style of your home! Think of what will best complement your home decor as well and what will look best displayed on your walls.

5. Some Things Recommended to Avoid

A rule of thumb for sessions is to stay away from super crazy patterns and stripes (unless that’s just totally your style!). Solid colors always make for the cleanest images! No -- that doesn’t mean you can’t wear pattern clothing, but if one of you is wearing a floral/pattern outfit, the other person needs to wear a solid color.

We want to create a balance between your outfits so it’s not too distracting. Competing patterns or colors make for busy photographs.

I strongly recommend not wearing any turtle necks, really loose clothing because it tends to make the individual wider than it seems or non-existent. Shorts and capris tend to have the same effect except for shortening the individual.

6. IRON IRON IRON!

PLEASE - please iron your clothes before a session! Crinkled clothes do not make clean photographs, especially for your engagement session. You want to look good and feel good and nothing says a clean look without freshly ironed clothes.

Don’t forget - EXPRESS YOUR OWN STYLE!
